Roads Scholar

OK. We'll have to indulge in a brief moment of fantasy here.

Imagine (don't actually try it or you'll probably strain something vital!) .....

Imagine that you have left the Engine Inn and are going to walk back.

OK, that's enough imagining you can go back to the bar now.

Meanwhile, it is a chance for us to briefly split infinitives and reflect on possible alternative routes you may wish to consider.

Consult ye the map above and you can see a squiggly green line [see Rosewall Hill section for further details of routes marked in yellow]. This majestic piece of cartography shows a route which mainly follows the roads other than the last (or first depending on which way round you're going) bit. Behold.

If you turn right way back at 4 on map (remember that?) you follow the road ..... Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 45
..... and come across the two footpaths ..... Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 46
..... which lead to the great quagmire. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 47
Ignore them, proceed to the pointy signpost and hang a left. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 48
This takes you merrily galumphing along the road towards Nancledra. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 49
Be warned that the school is up ahead so the road gets a little less tranquil during chucking in and out times! Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 50

You can just keep following this road into Nancledra. Turn left and walk up the main road to the Engine but the traffic can be a bit hair-raising.

Better off turning left here (just before you get to the school). Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 51
Follow the road down and at it's lowest point you should spot this path on the right. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 52
Hie ye hence up here. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 53
Remember the chimbley we mentioned earlier? Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 54
Thar she blows! Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 55
Just keep following the path ..... Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 56
..... until you get to the 'crossroads' [7 on map]. In which case, the path to the Engine will be on your right. Walk from St. Ives to the Engine Inn, Cripplesease 57
